A new approach to business fluctuations: heterogeneous interacting agents, scaling laws and financial fragility

چکیده
In this paper we discuss a scaling approach to business fluctuations. Our starting point consists in recognizing that concepts and methods derived from physics have allowed economists to (re)discover a set of stylized facts which have to be satisfactorily accounted for in their models. Standard macroeconomics, based on a reductionist approach centered on the representative agent, is definitely badly equipped for this task. On the contrary, we show that a simple financial fragility agent-based model, based on complex interactions of heterogeneous agents, is able to replicate a large number of scaling type stylized facts with a remarkable high degree of statistical precision.

Technological Innovation, Financial Fragility and Complex Dynamics In this paper we suggest a scaling approach to business cycles. We develop a heterogeneous interacting agents (HIAs) model that replicates well known industrial dynamics stylized facts, as the power law distribution of firms’ size and the Laplace distribution of firms’ growth rates. In particular, the power law is a persistent b...

Building on previous works on business fluctuations, we study the propagation of financial distress in a geographical setting. We model a network of regions, each populated by interacting heterogeneous agents, varying the level of interregional connectivity. Given the recent financial turmoils and the growing literature on the diffusion of financial crises, our aim is to identify patterns of fa...

B efore the incidence of the financial crisis in 2008, the financial sector was ignored in the most of business cycles analyses. It was assumed that the financial sector played no independent role in describing business cycle fluctuations and followed the real part of the economy. In recent years, modeling financial frictions have been much considered in business cycles literature. T...
متن کاملGovernance and Financial Fragility: Evidence from a Cross-Section of Countries
The author explores the role of governance mechanisms as a means of reducing financial fragility. First, he develops a simple theoretical general-equilibrium model in which instability arises due to an agency problem resulting from a conflict of interest between the borrower and lender. In particular, when governance is weak and transaction costs are high, the share of capital assets that credi...
